Reviews: Resisting Happiness by Matthew Kelly
"WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY? DO YOU KNOW?
BEFORE WE JUMP INTO THAT QUESTION, A BETTER PLACE TO START MIGHT BE WITH THIS QUESTION: ARE YOU HAPPY?"
So let me first say I haven't finished this book. I'm on Chapter 11/12 and still have a ways to go, but the beginning of the book had me questioning so many things.
My business life has been a process, but with all of the attention I've been giving it lately, I definitely see progress.
But my personal life? Shambles. I am all over the place emotionally, mentally, and financially.
I recently lost my car to a wreck that was of my mistake and delayed car note payments. Now, I'm the car-less caterer. Can you imagine the type of change that you experience with having no car. I had to sit my ass down.
So hell, I knew I had more time to read. I was at a friends house when I first saw this book. It intrigued me, but not enough to buy it. But after they began reading it and summarized the first few chapters, I knew it would definitely help my current mentality.
"NOTHING ON EARTH CAN SATISFY YOUR DESIRE FOR HAPPINESS."
I remember when I first bought my car, I said a million things that I would do to make sure I stay on track with payments. I said I would keep it sparkling clean and etc., and that buying this car successfully would make me extremely happy.
About four months in, I forgot I had a new car. I was smoking in it, behind on my note, and really just oblivious to the fact that I thought a car was going to make me genuinely happy.
It wasn't until recently that I started realizing how stressed I was with making my happiness depend on something or someone. Anything can be taken away from you at any moment, so what could I always depend on that would still bring me peace?
"PLACING ANYTHING AT THE CENTER OF OUR LIVES OTHER THAN GOD CREATES A DISORIENTATION THAT LEADS TO IMMENSE CONFUSION."
As much responsibility this book has made me take, I completely understand.
Yes, if I have 1,000,000+ followers on Instagram I'll be happy, yes, if I get a new car that's even better I'll be ecstatic, and oh my YES I'll be screaming of joy once I get control over my financial habits but --
I will never be satisfied until I center myself around God consistently.
I'm going to continue reading this book and making posts of how it correlates with my life along the way. I encourage you to read with me if you're interested!
I also snagged this book "The 4 Disciplines of Execution" by Chris McChesney and Sean Covey.
I've learned that the areas I'm struggling in within my life, I can research through reading and improve.
What are your current reads? Do you guys keep reading a book even if your current reality has nothing to do with it? I'm a self-help book GEEK, it's so hard for me to read novels and fiction novels.
I am you, I am me
